The Roy Wilmering Scout Cabin

History

For over seventy-five years, the Barrington Scout Cabin has provided local youth groups with a safe, secure, comfortable and convenient meeting place. Hundreds of Girl Scouts, Brownies, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and local youth groups use the Cabin every year. Built in 1934 and operated by volunteers ever since, the Cabin is dedicated to providing Barrington’s youth groups with a permanent place to meet. The Cabin represents one of only a few similar, volunteer-run operations in the United States. Located within the village, the Cabin has approximately 1200 sq. ft. of meeting space.

Construction

Constructed during the Depression, using donated funds, materials, tools and WPA manpower, the Cabin’s list of volunteers read like the “Who’s Who” of early Barrington. Individuals like Calkins, Bell, Lipofsky, Catlow, Etters, Maxon, Scharf, Hager and Lagendorf were all deeply committed to the Youth Cabin Project. The Cabin owes its existence to these farsighted individuals, as well as to the many others who have contributed to its maintenance and administration over the past seventy-five years.

Funding

The Cabin’s source of funding includes the Barrington Area United Way, Barrington Area Community Foundation, local service clubs and private donations. There is no charge to youth groups for Cabin usage. Cabin trustees and officers are community volunteers and there are no paid administrators. The Cabin qualifies as a tax exempt, charitable organization and donations are deductible to the extent tax laws allow.
Making something positive happen for the youth of our community is what the Roy Wilmering Scout Cabin is all about. It really is…Barrington’s Youth Group Facility.
